Tuesday Thoughts

1) I am drowning in laundry. I refuse to fold our clothes until the entire four loads are clean and dry, otherwise I have to stop in the middle before putting them away and it ruins my whole system. That means that I have a few very overflowing baskets in the meantime.

2) Adelaide is now going through a phase where she wakes up 15 minutes after falling asleep and then cries and cries. This is frustrating when she wakes up at midnight to eat and then takes another hour to fall back asleep, even though she is clearly very tired. Fortunately once she drifts back off after 1-2 rounds, she still sleeps for a while, so I can make up for the sleep lost. However, I am not my best at 1 and 2 am these days. Anyone have good tips for how to have self-control and be patient and loving when you are woken up 2 minutes after you finally fall asleep? It's not my area of strength!

3) What is the fascination with Rihanna and her music? She is not interesting and based on her appearance on Ellen yesterday, she has horrible fashion taste. What is with the toy soldier hat, frizzy bangs, and shirt made of ruffles? She is trying too hard.

She should be more like me and just throw on a wrinkly t-shirt and maternity jeans every day. Yes, it's 3 months later and my maternity jeans are still the most comfortable pair I own. Sad. Today I am wearing my pre-pregnancy jeans but they are are really uncomfortable at the waist. And I hate jeans-shopping so much I will refuse to go until I lose more weight. Motivation, baby. (I might cave eventually, though.)

4) Adelaide still refuses the bottle and I think I may give up, since it's clearly a battle of wills at this point. She has proven 4-5 times that she CAN take it but then 45 times that she doesn't WANT to take it, and the more of a fight it becomes, the more negative it all is. Yesterday I tried this cup:
which has a silicone flat nipple. I put cold water in it to make it a totally different experience to start with it and she was really into it. I wonder if it's because it's flat. She didn't do a great job sucking the water out, but she did try a bunch of times. I'm considering this route. The other tip I had from one of my feeding expert friends was to try an open cup using a tiny medicine cup to get her to at least enjoy taking milk some other way than the breast. I may also try spoon feeding it in for the same reason. What an adventure. It's definitely different being a parent problem solving these things than a therapist! I will have some new perspectives and insight on the frustration level of this when I go back to working with families around feeding.

5. I am excited to have pulled pork sandwiches with leftover Spicy Shredded Pork from the Pioneer Woman. I am also making trying her delicious looking Best Baked Beans Ever. This will hopefully be better than the weird Better Homes Basil Chicken in Coconut Curry sauce I made last night. I was so hoping it would be yummy but I was not impressed. Jesse liked it though, so I'm not sure what it was about it that didn't taste right to me. Maybe too much curry. Anyway.

6. We just watched the final episode of Dollhouse, one of our favorite tv shows over the past two seasons. Another great Joss Whedon show cancelled for no good reason like Firefly. It was clearly a step above almost all the other shows on TV right now. This happens to us all the time, so we should probably just stop watching TV because we're always frustrated when our favorites get cancelled after a season or two, but other crap shows like Two and a Half Men or Heroes run for season after season. I don't know what Joss will be up to next but I can assure you that we will be watching it religiously. He's a genius. :)

7. We got to go on a real date on Saturday and finally saw Avatar (which was still sold out, by the way). What a beautiful movie with beautiful effects. I loved the gorgeous planet and scenery. It kept drawing my thoughts to heaven and the beauty that we will be surrounded with, beauty that can't be destroyed, the Garden Restored. I didn't know going in what the storyline was and was totally surprised and shocked at the obviously intentional parallel to Native American history with elements of all colonialism (e.g., Africa) included. The best analogy I have ever seen to where the Native Americans are took place when The People, their home destroyed, gathered at their sacred place and grieved. Most of Native America is stuck there because, unlike the movie, they don't know of a hero who has come to give them hope. That's why we long to move to the Yakama Reservation - to show them the Hero who will give them hope, defeat the true enemy, and bring His people together in unity, love, and everlasting peace.

9. Our cat Chloe has started a nasty habit of urinating wherever she pleases, most of the time on a pile of our dirty clothes waiting to go in the washer or a blanket on the floor. I'm guessing it has to do with the baby because she avoids Adelaide like the plague, unlike our other cat, Mindy, who seems to love her and is always sniffing her, licking her, and curling up with baby and me. I don't know what to do about Chloe, but it's getting really old. Blah! Anyone else ever have this problem?

10. I don't have 10 things after all. Happy Tuesday!

  1. Oh my dearest Sarah, no one is at their best at 2 am and on no sleep. My husband would love to share with you about the time I woke him in the middle of the night and told him that he'd better take the baby from me before I threw her across the room.

DISCLAIMER: I am not an abusive mother and would have never thrown my darling child across the room. But you tend to say ridiculous things when you haven't slept for days!

  2. I think you need to report Lani.
    Kidding!
My husband asked for superglue to fix the baby in the middle of the night.
    It happens. :)

  3. HA! Yes I am fairly certain that I said the same thing (about throwing the baby out the window) to Jerry just a couple nights ago... It happens. :P And no, I would never actually do such a thing, but it's hard to think rationally when you're sleep-deprived...
