Glimpses of May

The peonies are in bloom and they smell so tangy sweet.  Frozen yogurt weather is here.  The interns who join our ministry for the summer months arrive tomorrow, which feels like the official start of summer 'round here.  Kingdom Kids will be wrapping up for the school year this week and you should visit our blog to see some pictures I snapped of the kids having fun playing softball recently before digging in to work on their homework!

My knitting doesn't look like it's grown at all - because it hasn't!  I forgot to decrease a few rows in my first attempt somehow and when I eventually got tired of unknitting, I went ahead and just pulled it all out and started again.  I'm now back where I was again and the stitch counts are all adding up.  Sweet little shrug I am test knitting for Lisa, taking a bit longer than it could have. Last night I finished Where'd You Go, Bernadette? which I really enjoyed.  Actually, I really enjoyed it to the last few chapters, at which point it seemed like the writing felt hurried and the ending not quite as creative as the rest of the book was. But it was a fun book to read and I would still recommend it to others!  Jesse and I started reading A Wrinkle in Time a couple months ago but never finished, so I decided to pick it back up.

I'v been reading bits and pieces from one of my favorite books, Hidden Art by Edith Schaeffer.  I have been mulling over the chapter on food and remembering that the meals I plan and prepare can be artistic even though they are simple.  Something about that excites me and holds off the feeling of drudgery  in  meal planning, grocery shopping, and cooking.

I am finally finishing touch-up work on the walls and trim in our room.  I love how it looks so bright and cheerful!  If we can ever afford it, I'd like to buy some kind of wood blinds for the huge picture windows we have in there right now.  I think we'll have to put our ugly curtains back up in the meantime because it is going to be unbearably hot in there all summer without them.  Oh boy, our windows are bad!  I left the winter plastic up because I hoped it would hold out some of the heat for awhile, but that's silly because the sun blazes in there all morning and afternoon.  However, without the plastic, the noise level from farm equipment and dogs barking is as if there were no glass at all, so there's another reason to keep it for now.

Looking forward to seeing what the week has held for others!  Joining with Ginny for Yarn Along again!

  1. Lovely--so much! I miss my girls-give them smooches from me. Wood slats would look great in there!

  3. I agree with your summary of the book, a tad hurried ending but I liked the book over all :)

  4. I work for Microsoft and felt like "Where'd You Go, Bernadette" was like "The Help" for Microsoft employees. She nailed the culture of the company down so well.

  6. Finding a few moments to see what everyone's up to here in blog-land. Love, love Edith Schaeffer's wonderful book...so encouraging. Glad you are enjoying snippets of it! Another busy week here as our son's family prepares to move on Saturday. I'm hoping/praying that life slows down next week. Please don't hesitate to email me if you have any pattern questions! Looking forward to catching up on activities in White Swan. We are still trying to figure out a time to visit the work there...

    xo, Lisa :)
